Joyce Leiphon and Light of the World Church a modern day Pharisee

Matthew 23 - Woes to the Scribes and the Pharisees
a. Jesus rebukes the scribes and the Pharisees.

1. (1-4) They lay oppressive burdens on others.

Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers."

a. Whatever they tell you to observer, that observe and do: Jesus says respect is due to the scribes and Pharisees - not because of their conduct, but because they sit in Moses’ seat. They hold an office of authority, ordained by God.

b. They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders: The first accusation against these religious leaders could apply to many religious leaders today. Many still make Christianity a set of burdensome rules to follow.

i. The early church rejected this legalism when it insisted that obedience to the Mosaic Law is not a foundation for the Christian life. Peter told the legalists in Acts 15:10: "Why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

c. Heavy burdens: The burden of the religious leaders contrasts sharply to Jesus’ burden. His burden is light, and His yoke is easy (Matthew 11:30).

2. (5-10) They do their works to be seen of others, and live for the praise of men.

"But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ."

a. All their works they do to be seen by men: The religious leaders were guilty of advertising their righteousness. Both the phylacteries (small leather boxes with tiny scrolls with scriptures on them, tied to the arm and head with leather straps) and the borders of their garments were worn in supposed conformity to the Mosaic Law (Deuteronomy 11:18, Numbers 15:38-40).

b. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments: Naturally, like every person in the flesh, the religious leaders figured that broader phylacteries and larger borders on their garments showed them to be more spiritual. There is virtually no end to the way that man’s depravity cannot pervert God’s commands.

c. They love the best places . . . greetings in the marketplaces: Not content to display their "spirituality," the religious leaders loved it when people admired their "spirituality." They coveted the seats of honor at banquets and at the synagogue, and they loved the honoring titles such as Rabbi and father.

3. (11-12) The way of Jesus: service and humility.

"But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

a. He who is greatest among you shall be your servant: In the flesh, we determine greatness by how many people serve and honor us. In Jesus, we determine greatness by how we serve and honor others.

i. Since Jesus truly was the greatest among them, He spoke of Himself as a servant. Unfortunately, for the most part the church has imitated the style of the scribes and Pharisees more than the style of Jesus.

b. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted: This promise is absolutely true, but sometimes needs the measure of eternity to make itself known.

b. The eight woes.

These woes stand in contrast to the eight beatitudes of Matthew 5:3-11. Jesus speaks harshly here, but this is not the language of personal irritation, but of divine warning and condemnation.

1. (13) Woe to those who shut up the kingdom.

"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in."

a. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Literally, the word "hypocrites" refers to an actor, someone playing a part. Jesus exposes the corruption covered by the pretty religious exterior.

b. You shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: The religious leaders kept people from the kingdom by obscuring God’s word with human traditions, and by denying Jesus. Empty religion and legalism do the same thing today.

c. You neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in: It is bad for someone to not enter into heaven themselves, but it is far worse to prevent another from going in (Matthew 18:6).

3. (14) The religious leaders steal from the vulnerable.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation."

a. You devour widows’ houses: They stole widows’ houses in the name of good business and "stewardship", and made long prayers for the sake of big donations.

b. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation: Jesus reminds us of the concept of greater condemnation; no one will have it good in Hell, but we can trust that some will have it worse than others will.

4. (15) The religious leaders led their converts on the wrong path.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves."

a. You travel land and sea to win one proselyte: Zeal in evangelism does not prove that a person is right with God. These religious leaders went to great lengths in their evangelism, but they brought people to darkness, not light.

i. Paul had the same idea in Romans 10:2, where he observed that some of the Jewish people of his day had a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

b. When he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves: In this respect, the religious leaders were similar to Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses today. They were courageous and energetic messengers, but with a false message.

5. (16-22) The religious leaders made false and deceptive oaths.

"Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.’ Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it.’ Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it. He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it."

a. Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing: Out of obedience to God’s word, they would not swear by the name of God (Exodus 20:7). But they constructed an elaborate system of oaths - some of which were binding and some were not - a way of making a promise while keeping your fingers crossed.

b. He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it: Jesus reminds us that every oath is binding, and God holds the oath-maker to account, even if they excuse themselves.

6. (23-24) The religious leaders are obsessed with trivialities, and ignoring the weighty matters.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!"

a. You pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin: Their tithing was meticulous and noteworthy; but not if it only soothed the guilt of their neglect of the weightier matters of the law.

i. Tragically, the church is often distracted with trivialities while the world goes to hell.

b. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel: Jesus illustrates their folly with a humorous picture of a gnat which could not be swallowed because it was not bled properly in accord with kosher regulations, and swallowing a whole camel instead.

7. (25-26) The religious leaders are impure both inside and out.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also."

a. You cleanse the outside of the cup: Many are satisfied with a superficial cleansing, and the appearance of righteousness before others. God looks for a true cleansing, so we can be clean before God and man.

8. (27-28) The religious leaders have the appearance of good, but without spiritual life in the inner man.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness."

a. You are like whitewashed tombs: Before Passover, it was the custom of the Jews of that time to whitewash the tombs in the city of Jerusalem so that no one would touch one accidentally, thus making themselves unclean. Jesus says these religious leaders are like these whitewashed tombs - pretty on the outside, but dead on the inside.

b. You also outwardly appear righteous to men: God is never fooled by what we show on the outside. He sees what we actually are, not what we appear to be to other men.

9. (29-36) The religious leaders honor dead prophets, but murder the living prophets.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’ Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt. Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation."

a. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous: They professed to venerate the dead, but they rejected the living. In doing so, they show that they really are the children of those who murdered the prophets in the days of old (you are sons of those who murdered the prophets).

i. We express the same thought when we think. "I wouldn’t have denied Jesus like the other disciples did."

b. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt: Jesus prophesies about how these leaders will complete the rejection of the prophets their fathers started by persecuting His disciples, whom He will send to them.

c. Serpents, brood of vipers: This phrase has the idea of "family of the devil." These religious leaders took an unmerited pride in their heritage, which was really of the devil, not of Abraham.

i. This is all pretty tough stuff. Why did Jesus utter such scathing rebukes? Because He loved these men. These men were the farthest from God and they needed to be warned of coming judgment. What Jesus really wanted was their repentance, not their judgment.

1. (37-39) Jesus laments for Jerusalem.

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’"

a. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem: Luke 19:41 tells us that Jesus wept as He looked over the city of Jerusalem, contemplated its coming judgment, and said these words. Jesus wanted to protect them from the terrible judgment that will follow their rejection of Him.

i. It is written that Jesus wept two times: here, at the pain of knowing what would befall those who reject Him, and at Lazurus’ tomb, weeping at the power and pain of death.

i. This heartfelt cry is another way to see that Jesus didn’t hate these men He rebuked so strongly. His heart broke for them. When we sin, God does not hate us, He genuinely weeps for us, knowing that in every way, our sin and rebellion only destroys our life.

iii. May we share God’s broken heart for a lost humanity!

b. You shall see Me no more till you say, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!" Jesus here reveals something of the conditions surrounding His Second Coming. When Jesus comes again, the Jewish people will welcome Him as the Messiah saying, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

i. It will take a great deal to bring Israel to that point, but God will do it, and Israel will welcome Jesus back - even as Paul said in Romans 11:26: And so all Israel will be saved.

  2. I looked at the scriptures that val listed also the website. Since each believer is to search the scriptures and seek the Lord for the truth. If they do they will find in the New Covenant not counting the Gospels and the book of revelations, that 14 books give warnings of false teachers and deceitful spirits and the consequences of believing their lies.As a believer we are to judge those that claim to be Christian by their fruit,if it reflects Jesus Christ. God will judge the world (the sinner). In Matt.13 the Tares (the sons of the devil) anyone that is not born again.Matt.25 ten virgins, all in covenant with the Lord.Five are lost. Also in Matt.25 slaves given talents, one that was given only one it was taken from him and he was lost. Also in Matt 25 goats and sheep, goats unbelievers sheep born again believers.Verse 41 Those on the left because they will not allow Jesus and him Crucified to be Lord of their life and allow him to live His Life in them. This sin which they chose will cause them to hear Depart from me accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.Because of sin Jesus chose to be crucified a horrible death,if one thinks that they can reject what He did and not allow him to be Lord and Master and do what He tells you to do. And they are not going to eternal fire with the devil. That they can practice sin and it doesn't matter.Wake Up!!!!In Jesus's Love JC

  3. Great comment JC. I hope and pray many will start reading the Word of God for themselves and ask the Father in Jesus Name to give them the understanding of His Word according to HIM and not man.

Just heard one of your teaching cd's on the internet. You have never ever been penniless. You have never been where you didn't have two nickles to rub together. If you are going to preach anything do not make up stuff that your life has never been. Joyce at 12 years old you didn't have a clue about anything. I also looked at your website about you and your church. You lied on that site as well. You have not been in ministry for 30 years or more. When daddy died you told everyone you were so depressed you thought about killing yourself. Joyce you are a false teacher you are a cult leader. I pray the Lord forgive you for slandering His wonderful Name. Stop lying to the people you say you care so much for. It is all about Jesus Christ and Him crucified. NO Where does the Bible the Word of God say we can be any type god. That is what Adam and Eve believed that is why Jesus the only son of God had to die the horrible death he did. You do not have a true understanding of the Word of God which is Jesus Christ and what he did for all men. You are not special you are not super spiritual. You are a liar and there will be no liars in heaven. The fact that you told your son that I wanted to put mother in a nursing home when we had that meeting at Tracy's before her surgery was a lie. tells me where you are. You will say and do anything for money just like you have always done. There has been no change in your life. When Jesus Christ becomes your LORD you cannot continue to live as you always have.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yeah you may have more money then you have ever had but the way you are getting is a sin. You are what Jesus Talked about in Matthew 23. Repent. You are leading many souls to the wide gate that Jesus warns us all about. If I didn't have a real relationship with Jesus and the UNDERSTANDING of the Holy Spirit I could have bought into your lies. However when I got saved 30 something years ago I found that I could not live the life of Christ no matter how hard I tried. I told God I could not do it and he told me if I could there would have been no need for Jesus to die for me. I asked God my Father in Jesus name to give me the truth and nothing but the truth. It took over 25 years to get the Word of Faith and the Catholic Church false teaching out of my heart mind soul and allow the LORD God and Father of Jesus Christ to impart the truth. The truth is what Paul preached and that is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. We are not to give money to make someone rich be worship as though they have attained the Prize as you preach. There will be many preachers like you in Hell unless you repent. The Word of God warns us all the be on the watch for false teacher such as you. It is all through the bible and in at least 14 books of the New testament not including the Gospels and the Word of Christ. I am asking you to repent and tell those who are following you that you are wrong. Daddy would be rolling over in his Grave if he were still there. I thank God he is with the LORD. He had told you the same and proved to me and Joe that the Word of Faith doctrine is from the pit of hell yet you still preach it. I know your reasons it is because you think more of yourself the you ought. You want to be worship just as you did when you were 12. You want to prove something that you cannot prove so you lie. You have lived the same life I have lived but do not have the nerve to tell the truth about yourself. Yet you want to spread lies about others. I do not care what you say about me but I do care deeply that you slander the Word of God by your lies. I have two sisters beside you that I love very much and also nieces and a great niece that are on there way to hell because of your false teaching. You say you love your daughter and God told you to offer her as the a sacrifice just as Abraham did Issac. Joyce you are fooling yourself and I want to know that if the rapture of the Church happens today and you are left behind will anyone who has followed you listen to the truth if you were to tell it. I do not hate you but I do hate the fact that you are teaching untruths and leading many to destruction. The narrow gate is Only through Jesus Christ and you are not preaching that truth. You are preaching lies and half truths. The sad thing is I believe you know you are but you want the wealth of the world and to be worshiped. Jesus Christ came as a servant who are you serving when you do not preach the true Gospel of Jesus but instead the doctrines of demons. Have you ever researched the beginning of the Word of Faith movement. I have it is pure witchcraft. If you love your daughter as you say you do you will find out the source of what you are teaching her and tell her the truth so she can and the others following you can get in a real relationship with Jesus Christ.

  6. I had to post the above which is an email I sent Joyce. I have another that I will POST. So I want to say that those who are following YOu are following the wrong god. Jesus said my sheep no my voice and a strangers they will not follow. I have a question for you and most of all of my sister Joyce. Who died for YOU. Has Joyce sacrificed anything for YOU.. Its been said I am out to destroy Joyce. That is the farther from the truth. I am out to destroy any lie that is coming against the truth of the Word of God. IF she is preaching these lies and half truth yet I am out to destroy that.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I am being told that even if every thing I am saying is true about Joyce and what she teaches since I am her blood sister I should not be saying the truth. IF you are teaching the lies that Joyce is teaching and stealing from your own sisters and other men and women who claim to be one of HIS and I do not speak out against this I will be guilty of the blood of all those who follow Joyce to destruction.

  8. If Susan would be honest with herself as well as if you she would tell you that what I am saying is true. Joyce has always been greedy for money. There has been no change in her lifestyle. She still wants to be worshiped. She still wants to use your money and save hers. She will take your last dollar and watch you starve before she lifts one finger to help you. Yeah what she preaches will work if you are a liar cheat and a thief. Which she is or she could not be using you as she is. Joyce is headed for destruction and so is everyone who is following her and not the LORD JESUS CHRIST Run from this false teacher run for you life it depends on it.

  9. In the Worlds eyes I would be considered poor. I have a small house I drive a suv that is over 10 years old. I do not have large sums of money in the bank on this earth. But My Father owns all the cattle on the hills. My Father blesses me every day with a closer walk with HIM. If anyone questions me on why I believe What I believe and why I say the things I do about my sister Joyce. I am happy to use the Word of God and show anyone who wants the truth what My Fathers word say about Joyce Leiphon. It truly isn't pretty. It isn't about being worship in this life. Jesus said clearly that if you are one of HIS we will be persecuted for HIM NAME sake. Joyce thinks she is be persecuted for Jesus name sake and that is not the truth she is being called out for what she is a False teacher,.

  10. Joyce and my other sister refuse to discuss what they believe. Joyce will not even talk to me but she will say that I hate her. That she used to think of my as her mother. Manipulation has always worked for her. When she realized that I could not be manipulated by her she has cut me off as thought I am dead. She is pretending to be Jesus and keeping his mouth shut while be question before his death. Well Joyce you are on the wrong side of Jesus Christ. YOU do not trust in him or even believe HE can do all the things he has said he would do for those who follow him. You have get out there and steal peoples money telling just like in any MLM scheme that they also can be rich after they make you rich. Wake up people before it is to late

  11. Since Joyce will not respond to me personally I will say all that I have via this blog. She may tell you not to read it but I am telling she is reading it. When Joyce comes to KY in Feb. I have to prepare her for the fact she will not be worshiped. She will have her sister and daughter and her niece to wait on her But I have shared what Joyce is teaching with all the ones she is planning to take money from. Guess what it ain't going to happen. they know the truth about JOYCE. remember the old saying " You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time. IF you are following JOYCE LEIPHON you are being fooled ALL the time. She only wants your money.

  12. If you truly want to support the Work of God you would not be giving any money to liars such as Joyce Leiphon. You want a blessing from God our Father. I suggest you support jsm.or or Charles Stanly as intouch.org. They are preaching the truth.

  13. If Joyce and her sisters are so sure that what the have is true, then like their dad they should sit down with jfc and explain it. If it is true what they believe and in the word of God. From what I have read on this blog it looks like jfc when shown that their wrong would admit it and change. On the other hand will Joyce and her sisters do either, a adult discussion? Her dad wanted to know the truth and would change when the word of God was rightly divided and he saw he was wrong.Left roman catholicism,Kenneth Hagin word of faith teaching. He walked in the word of God and was taught by the Holy Spirit how to allow Jesus Christ to be Lord of his life and to live His Life In him. He learned he could not follow man blindly.Found he had to know the Word himself and if was true in the Word then he would walk with them. Can Joyce, jfc, her sisters do the same ?

  14. Could I possibly have read correctly in one of these posts that this pastor actually said that God told her to offer her daughter as a sacrifice? If that is, in fact, true, 3 things: #1, Daughter, you need to get the hell out of Dodge, #2, if the daughter does end up dead, we will all know who to turn in to the police, and #3, if this pastor is truly crazy enough to sacrifice her own flesh and blood, then every individual who comes in contact with this extremely sick woman needs to watch their back. I truly cannot believe what I read; I am going to show this post to my ophthalmologist to see if I really do need new eyeglasses. Unbelievable! I am in absolute shock.

  15. No you do not have eye problems. Joyce said that on a teaching CD she has made. YOu know I never thought of that they way you did but you know when someone profess to Be Good well. If my memory serves me right has there been quite a few serial killers that they they were god.

  17. These pastors are not only money hungry, but often power hungry too. They want to be both pastor and master. They commit the sin of the Pharisees and appoint themselves as middle men between God and you. They seek to replace the Holy Spirit in your life. They "lord it over" their flocks. Read Cultwatch's articles on the "Super Apostles" here if you want to find out more.

Using the connection they claim to have with God they threaten you with the stick of spiritual curses if you disobey them, and dangle the carrot of spiritual blessings if you comply. They seek to dominate your life; often implying that they have say in where you work, where you fellowship, who you marry, and of course, when, where, and how much you should give.

This is a false spiritual authority not supported by Scripture. In fact I believe it to be quite devilish (the desire to control and dominate others).

In these pastor's prosperity teaching, obeying the pastor and giving money are the two pillars necessary for a successful Christian life. If you sit back and think about it, you will quickly see what a con it is.

These men want to be at the head of everything, they want to dominate you, they want to be seen as the big man, and some even secretly desire adoration (almost worship). This is the opposite of true Christian leadership:

Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. - Luke 22:24-27

Did your pastor have you sign a covenant agreement with her? That is totally It is not a legal document. IF you had to sign such a document leave as fast as you can this preacher only wants your money. She is probably laughing all the way to the bank about how she has pulled the wool over your eyes.

  18. I will say most people who remain in a group where the Pastor is in control of everything like what the are hearing and really do not care about hearing the truth. After reading the things on this blog if I was a member of Joyce Leiphon church I would either leave or report her abuse the the law enforcement. If you think she is connected to the law then go to the IRS. the do prosecute income tax evasion.

  20. Most Holy God my heavenly Father and the Father who Raised Jesus Christ from the Dead who was crucified for the sin of all men and the failures of them that profess to believe. Father in Jesus mighty name I come boldly before your Throne of Grace asking for the forgiveness of my sin and asking for you according to your Word to open the blind eyes of those following false teachers. Father I ask first for myself and then for all my family including those who are far off. Just as you used Moses to tell Pharaoh " Let my People go" I am asking you to use this blog to set the captives free from the evil one. To open the ears of those who follow false teaching that they may hear the truth no matter what is preached. That they may come to know the YOU are God and there is no other. I ask this LORD that they may be saved according to your Words and the Prayer of Jesus your only son when he prayed for those you had given HIM. That prayer was and is that none be lost. Father in Jesus name I ask this so your people will be free to worship to YOU the only LORD and God. I praise your HOLY name and I thank you Father for your loving kindness and your Great mercy shown unto me through Jesus Christ my Savior. Heal them lord of their unbelief. In Jesus name AMEN

  21. Joyce Leiphon, on her website, states that she was delivered from a near-death experience and gives God all the glory for HER life. Yet, she supposedly said something on a CD about sacrificing her own daughter. Doesn't make a lot of sense.
